HTC to focus on the Desire lineup at CES

As expected the HTC One (M8) successor rumored as HTC Hima won’t make it to CES 2015 in Vegas early next year. While HTC has already sent invitations for a special press eventon January 5 in Las Vegas and HTC Hima has even leaked via AnTuTu, it seems the flagship won't be stealing the spotlight just yet.
A newly released teaser on Weibo says "Always Desire more", which clearly means new Desire smartphone or smartphones will be announced at CES. This isn't such a surprise though as both HTC One and HTC One (M8) weren't introduced on CES, but prior and after the MWC expos in February-March.
HTC may want to announce the new One flagship at a stand-alone event once again thus not sharing the news with any major competition.
So, a new Desire or Desire phones are coming. One of them is probably the recently leaked HTC A-12 mid-ranger powered by the Snapdragon 410 chipset and offering a 4.7" 720p display. The rest of its rumored specs include 1GB of RAM, an 8MP cam and a 2,100 mAh battery. Android KitKat and Sense UI should be in charge of operations.
HTC A12 will allegedly launch on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless in the United States. We will keep an eye out for more details on the handset going forward.

Be the hobbit of the high street with the WiFi-seeking WarSting sword

If you’re prone to walking around with your phone hunting WiFi trying to check your messages, the WarSting Hobbit-inspired sword will at least add some fun to the proceedings.
WarSting glows when it detects an open WiFi signal, rather than just any old locked network. Along with the glow, the sword connects with a thrust and plays a victory sound when it’s locked on.
Now, the sad news is it’s a DIY project, so if you’ve got a few days to tinker over New Year’s, this is the perfect project.

Thanks to my buddy Eric at Geekbuying.com, I was able to purchase a reasonably priced 3D printer for my son for Christmas. He's 15...and kind of an engineering type...and for the last 6 months he's been bugging me about getting him one....LIKE REALLY BUGGING ME. His other love is baseball...so it didn't surprise me that the first print job was a baseball cap as you can see in the picture.

I've decided to start this thread to share our experiences in getting the thing built and set up.

Now, my wife was not in agreement or the least bit supportive about this project...but at the last minute we both convinced her that the $1,000 printers she was looking at weren't all that necessary. A few days before Christmas, Eric came through with a discount and I purchased an Aurora Z605. You do need to figure in a little more in the budget for shipping costs, because there is no free shipping.

Because of the delay in making the decision to buy...the box didn't make it until the day after Christmas. But my son was extremely happy...because I let him know he was getting it. There was also a delay in actually getting a variety of filaments to print with...so until they arrive, we are trying to conserve the included demo filament.

Overall, it took us 2 days to put the thing together. The directions come on a DVD with a PowerPoint and some videos that show you each step in the assembly process. Because of a few Chinese/English translation kinks...towards the end it became a little bit rocky...but I'm happy to say that we now have a working 3D printer...after another 2 days of trying to figure out the software.

The problem with the instructions is that once the printer is built, it doesn't explain at all what to do to get your first print job started. I will try to add a post with how we got the thing to finally print. It involves a proper mix of extruder heat and fan cooling among other things.

I have an old Avertech laptop with Windows 7 on it I was planning on dedicating to just 3D printing, but due to the unique device driver setup on the laptop (with many proprietary parts)...I gave up even trying to use it...and went to the family Windows 7 Acer desktop (for now, anyway). The drivers and software loaded right away.

I will be adding some pictures and videos on this thread as we get more relaxed with the features and have a few prints under our belts.

This has been a very cool father and son project...that neither one of us has totally lost it. I've just watched and offered suggestions...and he's done all of the work.

I can't show you the unboxing part (which is usually pretty dry anyway) because the box showed up while I was at work...and the framework was already put together when I got home. The videos provided on the DVD were very good examples. Except my son put the frame together backwards and didn't discover it until the thing was pretty much built...so we had to do our own design adjustments to keep from having to disassemble and start over again.

One thing I must warn you about if you get one of these is that the DVD contains an app called Driver Genius. DO NOT USE THIS APP UNLESS YOU CAN READ CHINESE. While it may actually contain the ability to load the drivers for you...this app is FULL OF CHINESE SPAM that you can't get rid of unless you can read Chinese. I was able to install the drivers the hard way by turning off the option that makes Windows search Windows Update for the driver before allowing you to browse your drive for the real drivers.

Stay tuned for future posts...and feel free to chime in if you have anything to add. Jackson and I still have a bunch of learning to do with these things.

Teclast T98 4G RileyROM 1.0 comes out

Teclast T98 4G RileyROM 1.0

This ROM is based on official Teclast firmware T98 4G八核 (C6R2)-Android4.4.4-V1.08-5BA6 from their support site.

I do not own one of these tablets, so let someone experienced with flashing custom ROM's try this and post here their results from testing before trying as a beginner.

I've only changed the boot.img and system.img files...so the rest of the firmware is completely stock. I had errors getting the scatter file to load in the flash tool that was included with the firmware, so I've switched to the version of the SP flash tool I've been using on all of my other ROM's. I had no trouble making a custom CWM Recovery for this ROM with MTK Droid Tools.

This ROM is:

Rooted with ClockworkMod Superuser
Debloated
Init.d/Busybox support added
There were no ABN files, so I'm not sure how to change the user app space on this ROM. It may be combined with the internal SD space.
New boot animation
CWM Recovery created with MTK Droid Tools v2.5.3
Reboot app by Petrus
Google Play Store fixes
English Default

Just follow the instructions in the First Time User's Guide PDF file in the root folder of the ROM kit.

Download

NOTE: Normally, I include a copy of MTK Droid Tools in the ROM kit so you can use it to back up your IMEI and NVRAM data...however v2.5.3 of MTK Droid Tools produces a virus scan error and prevents me from adding it to the zip files. You can get with Google.

PLEASE READ POST #4 on this thread for information about backing up your IMEI and NVRAM data:

NEW - Finless 1.0 ROM for the Minix X6 review

NEW - Finless 1.0 ROM for the Minix X6

Hey folks..... A little Neo X6 love coming your way.

This is my 1.0 ROM for the Neo X6. It is made for the latest X6 stock ROM dated 12/25.

PLEASE NOTE!
Minix changed the keys in recovery for the X6 and thus if you try to flash using the stock recovery in NAND, you will get a signature verification error! Therefor I have provided a modified recovery.img in this ZIP package. You must use this from SDcard! It will not work on a USB disk or memory stick.
AML devices on first boot look on SDcard for a recovery.img if it doesn't find one it will boot recovery from NAND memory.
So make sure you put my modified recovery on SDcard! You will know you are booted into my modified recovery as it will say "Finless Unlocked Recovery" at the top of the recovery menu.

_________________________________________

Features of my Finless ROM 1.0

1) This erases NAND /data so YES you lose all data! Sorry I must do this for clean up!

2) It roots the ROM properly.
Let me tell you Rooting on Kitkat in the ROM itself gets harder all the time to do it correctly and not using scripts!
Once again due to changes with SuperUser and SU with SELinux, it was more difficult to root the ROM
so it did not need to update the SU binary on firt boot! Enjoy...

3) It debloats the ROM of all those pre-installed APPS. This includes Airplay and Minix XBMC!
The reason I removed them is because Minix XBMC may still have bugs and some don't use airplay at all.
I have given you those APPs in a folder called Removed_Apps in this Zip so you can install them yourself if you like.

4) I removed useless system apps.
Note: Minix had several APKs in /system/app that do not even work! Prime example is Gmail APP.
Sometimes I wonder why they stay so behind in this area.

5) I updated what APPs are left including Google Play and all the Google framework.
As of this release, everything is updated so when you logon to Google Play nothing needs updating.

6) Minix messed up Google calendar again. APK was there but did not work.
Also because they are still using a old Google Core, contacts sync messes up after update.
This is all fixed.

7) I fixed Google+ (plus) and Google Music APPs so you can install and use these direct from the play store!
You do not need to use the old Google Music Minix provides.
Google+ now shows up in the Play Store where on stock ROM it would not. Even side loading the APK it would not work.

8) Installs a cleaned up the AOSP launcher and puts more useful things in the doc bar.

9) I give you a TWRP recovery! Yes this flashes a TWRP recovery to NAND.
This TWRP is modified using the X6 recovery keys and it will install Minix Stock X6 ROM ZIPs!
Build.prop in this TWRP is also from the stock Minix recovery so again it will flash Stock X6 ZIP files.
However, understand how recovery works.
If you put a recovery.img on External SDcard the box will boot that recovery instead of TWRP in NAND.
In this package I give you a stock recovery flasher.
This ZIP will install the stock recovery to NAND if you don't want TWRP and I also give you TWRP recovery flasher if you want to put TWRP back in NAND.
Again please note as above! Flashing the stock recovery you cannot use it to flash TWRP or any of my other ZIPs.
You must use a recovery on SDcard that I provide in my package or you will get signature verification failures!

10) I give you build.prop spoofer ZIP updates in this download!
One will switch build.prop to emulate a Nexus 10.
The other one will switch you back to a NEO-X8H-PLUS.
You can use these back and forth and they do not erase anything!
Please note: You may want to clear the cache and data on the Google Play Store, Google Play Services after switching!
To do this, go into settings/apps scroll over to ALL and click on each and clear cache and data.
You know you did it right if the next time you run Google Play it asks you to accept terms.
NOTE: The new FOTA updater will still work with the nexus build.prop.
I did not modify the FOTA section of build.prop.
BUT REALIZE, depending on the OTA update from Minix, this may bust my ROM and take you back to stock!

11) Did a little "theming" this time. Hope you like it. Also Themed the Metro launcher
12) Other tweaks and mods I do for my ROMs.
13) Updated the boot logo to show if your booting up in 1080 or 720.

NEW - MK808B-Plus - Finless ROM 1.1

NEW - MK808B-Plus - Finless ROM 1.1

Here is my 1.1 ROM for the MK808B-Plus.

This is made from the latest 109K4 release that fixes USB dongles (kind of).

Everything is pretty much the same as my 1.0 ROM as far as what I did to it.

Note: If you are on 108K4 it has a messed up recovery thus you MUST use the recovery.img I provide in this ZIP package.

__________________________________________________ __________

Features and release notes for my 1.1 ROM:

1) It roots the ROM properly and is not using any scripts!
Let me tell you Rooting on Kitkat in the ROM itself gets harder all the time to do it correctly and not using scripts! Once again due to changes with SuperUser and SU with SELinux, it was more difficult to root the ROM so it did not need to update the SU binary on first boot! Enjoy...

2) Updated Google framework core files. The ones in the stock ROM were out of date.
On first boot NOTHING will need to be updated once you logon to Google Play.
That is as of this date.

3) Debloated of junk APPs and Google Apps you can get from Google Play.
There was quite a few useless apps! Some I have no clue what they even were!
I did remove XBMC and other pre-install APPs as well. I like a CLEAN ROM that you the user can setup the way you want.
Having APPs in /system leaves that junk in there forever (unless you delete them by hand with a root explorer).
NOTE: The XBMC that came with the stock ROM is in this ZIP package. Feel free to install it if you like.

4) As always, full init.d support! If you do not know what that is... ignore it. For geeks that want to use it. It is there!
This time around due to updated security in 4.4, init.d was a lot harder to get working.
Again I had to figure it out!

5) I add the AOSP Launcher and modified several things:
Removed the Google search bar by request.
Added more than one screen for scrolling.
Updated the dock icons to things more useful.
Apps installed with Google Play will automatically be added to the home screen.
I think you will like this launcher better

6) I give you a TWRP recovery! Yes this flashes a TWRP recovery to NAND.
This one has been fixed with MK808B-Plus kernel and KO modules as well as fixed errors due to fstab.
Now, understand how recovery works.
If you put a recovery.img on External SDcard the box will boot that recovery instead of TWRP in NAND.
In this package I give you a stock recovery.img.
Just copy that out and put it on SDcard anytime you want to use the stock recovery instead of TWRP.

7) Build.prop edit to open up the Google Play store to APPs that normally say "not compatible".
I am spoofing a Samsung device (Nexus 10) that will show almost any APP as compatible.
I left the original build.prop in /system called build.orig
You can use ES File Explorer to edit the names and switch back if you like.

8) I added a reboot APP that will allow optional reboot options like reboot to recovery for easier updates.

9) Adjusted some permissions so stock XBMC/KODI works.

10) Carrier spoofs for better APP compatibility.

11) Fixed issues with some streaming APPs like Bell TV.

12) The usual tweaks I do for better performance e.g. TCP buffers sizes, etc etc.

13) Did a little "themeing" to the AOSP Launcher stock wallpaper.

14) Updated the boot logo to show if your booting up in 1080 or 720.

NEW - Finless 1.1 ROM for the Minix X8H-PLUS

NEW - Finless 1.1 ROM for the Minix X8H-PLUS

OK folks, with the release of new firmware 12/25 for the X8 Plus, here is my new 1.1 ROM.

PLEASE NOTE:
Minix has now been Google certified. What this means is special keys have been flashed to NAND.
The kernel checks these keys and if they are not right it wont boot.
Because of this, the stock recovery will ONLY boot from NAND memory.
It will not boot the stock recovery from SDcard!
If you are on a pre-11/22 ROM then to flash my ROM you need the recovery.img I provide in this ZIP on Sdcard.
The one in NAND memory pre-11/22 does not work (blank screen).
What I have done is put a non-locked kernel in this recovery and in the TWRP recovery I provide.
These work fine from SDcard or NAND.

1) This erases NAND /data so YES you lose all data! Sorry I must do this for clean up!

2) It roots the ROM properly.

In this package I give you a stock recovery flasher.
This ZIP will install the stock recovery to NAND if you don't want TWRP.
NOTE: Now that Minix has become Google certified, the stock recovery.img WILL NOT BOOT from SDcard!
It will only boot from NAND. However, in this package I give you a stock recovery.img that works.
This is NOT the one in my recovery flasher. My recovery flasher to flash the stock recovery back, will install the locked recovery.
The recovery.img at the root of this ZIP file will work from SDcard and it is used to flash my ROM.
If you are on a Pre 11/22 Minix Plus ROM, you will need this recovery on sdcard!

10) I set the default settings to allow non-market APPs.
Now when you go to install a APK you wont be forced to go into settings and turn that on. I personally hate that

11) I give you build.prop spoofer ZIP updates in this download!
One will switch build.prop to emulate a Nexus 10.
The other one will switch you back to a NEO-X8H-PLUS.
You can use these back and forth and they do not erase anything!
Please note: You may want to clear the cache and data on the Google Play Store, Google Play Services after switching!

12) Minix unlocked the low CPU frequency scaling and the governor type.
Thus my old CPU Fix patches are no longer needed as you can now use CPU control APPs.
However I did find something that could be better tweaked for CPU control and that is default and max CPU scaling.
So I supply you with one CPU patcher to fix those and allow them to "stick" when set.
See the README in that folder for what it is and does and how to use them!

13) Did a little "theming" this time. Hope you like it. Also Themed the Metro launcher

14) Other tweaks and mods I do for my ROMs.

15) Updated the boot logo to show if your booting up in 1080 or 720.

Dell Venue 10 Bluetooth Keyboard Shows Up In Pictures At FCC

As you may know, from a while there’s a rumor on the web about the fact that Dell prepares the launch of the Venue 10 tablet, device that will bring a 10 inch panel with a 2.560 x 1.600 pixels resolution, 2 GB of RAM and a quad-core Intel processor. Recently, a bluetooth keyboarddesigned for this tablet was seen in pictures at FCC.
venue-10-kb-1
Taking in consideration that this keyboard is going to receive soon certification from FCC, we expect that the tablet announcement to be next, a good place for this launch being the CES 2015 tech show that will take place in Las Vegas in January.
venue-10-kb-2
According to the manual posted along with the pics by FCC, we get to know that the keyboard comes with some dedicated keys for tablet functions such action menu, home, search and apps. We get volume rockers, a button for brightness, as well as media control buttons to pause/play music or videos.

Huawei Honor X2 pictures and specs leaked, features full metal body

honor-x2-leak1
Huawei Honor X1 was one of the better 7-inch phablets out there in the market. Now, the second generation model named Huawei Honor X2 has been leaked online. Huawei will reportedly launch the device at the upcoming CES 2015. So, you’ll get to see the next generation model within a year of launch of the X1 phablet, which was announced back at MWC in February.
honor-x2-leak2
These pictures were earlier leaked by a website called nowhereelse.fr claiming to be the next Huawei Ascend P8. However, as you can see, the device in the pictures is too big to be the rumored 5.2-inch P8. In fact, they reveal a much bigger form factor, somewhere around 7-inches, which is exactly what this latest leak claims it to be i.e. the new Honor X2.
honor-x2-leak3
From what we can see in the pictures, the Honor X2 looks like a great device. The tablet will come with a full metal body. As you can see in the pictures leaked, the back metal panel has a smooth finish, but given that this is just a component of the device, the final product will have some kind of coating over this back plate. The power button, volume rocker keys, MicroSIM slot as well as the MicroSD card slot are located on one side of the device. This isn’t surprising given that the current generation Honor X1 features all these slots/ buttons on one side too. The corners are less rounded than the earlier model, making it look like a true tablet instead of a phone. But the rest of the designs remains somewhat similar to the Honor X1.
The leak also provides us with some specs. The Honor X2 tablet phone is expected to come with the same Kirin 925 processor that we saw in recent releases. There will be 3GB RAM inside. The 7-inch display on the front comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The Huawei Honor X2 tablet is a phone in the body of a tablet, so you can do regular smartphone stuff on the large screen like calling, messaging etc. The device will be unveiled at CES 2015, which is just a few days away and will reportedly retail for a price tag of 1999 Yuan, which comes to around $320.
We still don’t know many of the phone’s features like the camera, battery, internal storage or even the measurements, but given that it will be announced at CES 2015, we don’t have to wait too long for the info.
So, what do you think about this upcoming phone tablet?
