Fewer and fewer people are buying iPads

There is a point where the market is filled with product and it drops on demand. Most likely, the reason lies in the decline in sales of tablet Apple released its sales results for the last quarter.

The company from Cupertino again shared with the world of quarterly results, both financial and retailer experience. We are talking about the fourth fiscal quarter and the third quarter of this year. According to published information, Apple received 51.5 billion dollars in revenue, and profit of the company amounted to $ 11.1 billion. In the previous quarter, revenue reached 49.6 billion dollars. In the same quarter of the previous year, profit came in at 8.5 billion dollars. The results thus show a clear increase.
Financial results / photo. Apple
Simultaneously with published data show that iPads are selling worse. Currently, sales reached 9.89 million units ceiling. In the previous quarter the figure was 10.93 million in the previous year 12.32 million copies. Since the introduction of the first iPad it's been a few years. Currently, Apple is getting less attention iPadowi Mini. Microsoft itself even not allowed to sell the Surface Mini. The reasons of such decision can be discerned in many factors. Probably the boom in tablet just from year to year begins to fade. Saturated market the product in question is no longer interested in buying the device, which most willing surely already have. Adding to the longer life of tablets, smartphones can be seen as unambiguous, a possible cause of the drop in sales. Source: Apple.com

Is the lack of roaming in the EU will increase the use of tablets on the go?

Is the lack of roaming in the EU will increase the use of tablets on the go?

The European Parliament voted on the abolition of roaming charges in the European Union countries. What does this mean for users of mobile and tablet?
Being on foreign tours, business trips or regular trips to many people suffer one hardship, regardless of their location. These are high stakes for roaming charges. Nowadays the phone and the tablet is properly handheld computers for everything (ringing, doing things, moving around the city or surfing the Internet). To put it bluntly – useful in any situation. Departures increase the service life of handsets several times. A very small size of the tablets are invaluable when it comes to their ability and the amount of occupied space in your suitcase. Most of the latter module is a 3G or LTE. In addition, during trips always increases the number of calls, text messages and time spent on the rapid and reusable connecting to the network. Therefore, there are more bills for use of the invaluable benefits of communication tools. That's all, however, will change in two years. Recently, the European Parliament held an important vote on the package of regulations related to telecommunications. The EP adopted that from 15 June 2017 years will be abolished roaming charges. It will therefore not need to pay for calls, sending text messages and downloading and uploading phones in the EU. At least no more than in a country with which there is agreement on the card or subscription. The European Union is currently paying 31 cents for a single text message. Minute call costs 97 cents, and 1 MB of data will cost 1.02 dollars. Moreover, on 30 April 2016 roaming charges will be reduced by 0.05 euros per minute per call and per 1 MB of data and 0.02 euros per SMS. The first rumors about the free roaming mentioned already in the past year. Source: the European Parliament

iPad Sales Continue To Fall: I Blame Tim Cook

iPad Sales Continue To Fall: I Blame Tim Cook

Those considering buying iPads, however, were likely trying to figure out if they want the new iPad Pro or even the iPad mini 4. Tablet sales in general haven’t been doing well, a trend that Apple has not been able to counter with the iPad. In fact, iPad sales have been falling for more than a year now, and this is the first quarter Apple has sold under 10 million iPads since Q4 2011.
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
The iPad was supposed to usher in a new computing paradigm, a new way for people to interact with a device. In fact, it was supposed to be something as world-changing as the original Macintosh.
That revolution seems to have come to an abrupt halt.
I can understand Android tablet sales plummeting. The market was flooded with tablets that were low-cost and absolute shit — thank you for your greed and contempt for your customers, Borders Books, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart — but the iPad still falling?
I think at this point it’s fair to point the finger at another factor.
That factor is Tim Cook is not a leader.
Remember when the iPhone was introduced waaaay back when?
There were two models. A 4GB and an 8GB one.
Let me turn to iMore’s history: History of iPhone: Apple reinvents the phone:
Then there was the price. The iPhone debuted at $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB model on-contract. Those prices weren’t unheard of at the time—early Motorola RAZR flip phones were incredibly expensive as well—but it meant Apple couldn’t penetrate the mainstream market.
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
But what happened next?
Steve Jobs showed he was a goddammed leader:
The price, however, kept it from getting into as many hands and lives as Apple wanted. So, at the September 5, 2007 “The Beat Goes On” music event, Steve Jobs not only introduced the first iPod touch, he announced they weredropping the 4GB iPhone entirely, and dropping the price of the 8GB iPhone to $399.
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
Within three months of the iPhone’s introduction, Jobs already killed one of the models and dropped the price.
And this was for a product that was popular beyond Apple’s wildest imaginings!
Here’s Apple’s press releasequoting Jobs himself:
“The surveys are in and iPhone customer satisfaction scores are higher than we’ve ever seen for any Apple product,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve clearly got a breakthrough product and we want to make it affordable for even more customers as we enter this holiday season.”
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
Where the hell was Tim Cook at the time? Didn’t he learn anything from that bold move?
What we’ve had from the post-Jobs Apple is the atrocity of the iPad Mini actually going up in price, from its original ridiculous US$329 (it should have been US$299!) to US$399.
What the hell kind of leadership is that?
It’s not.
It tells me those in charge have zero confidence in the product and so want to squeeze every possible stray nickel out of any unit that happens to sell.
Steve Jobs wouldn’t have pulled that shit.
Not at all.
He would have said, “You know, the iPad isn’t selling in the volume I want.People really need to have this. It will change their lives. We cut prices with the iPhone, so let’s do that with the iPad too. What we lose on per-unit sales I’m sure we’ll make up in volume, accessories, app sales, and customer good will. For some people this will be their first Apple product. And that will show them what Apple means as a brand. They’ll never touch an Android device ever again. And we’ll exterminate all those crappy tablets that are misleading people about what the iPad is like.
That is leadership.
Jobs always had a vision of computing for the rest of us. From the Isaacson bio:
Their first substantive disagreement was over how to price the Macintosh. It had been conceived as a $1,000 machine, but Jobs’s design changes had pushed up the cost so that the plan was to sell it at $1,995. However, when Jobs and Sculley began making plans for a huge launch arid marketing push, Sculley decided that they needed to charge $500 more. To him, the marketing costs were like any other production cost and needed to be factored into the price. Jobs resisted, furiously. “It will destroy everything we stand for,” he said. “I want to make this a revolution, not an effort to squeeze out profits.” Sculley said it was a simple choice: He could have the $1,995 price or he could have the marketing budget for a big launch, but not both.
“You’re not going to like this,” Jobs told Hertzfeld and the other engineers, *but Sculley is insisting that we charge $2,495 for the Mac instead of $1,995.” Indeed the engineers were horrified. Hertzfeld pointed out that they were designing the Mac for people like themselves, and overpricing it would be a “betrayal” of what they stood for. So Jobs promised them, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to let him get away with it!” But in the end, Sculley prevailed. Even twenty-five years later Jobs seethedwhen recalling the decision: “It’s the main reason the Macintosh sales slowed arid Microsoft got to dominate the market.”
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
Jobs always described computers as a bicycle for our minds:
Bicycle. Not a Rolls Royce.
In the current market — which can’t be ignored — the iPad is priced like a Rolls Royce.
Price it like a bicycle.
So, Tim Cook: Are you are leader or just someone maintaining the status quo?
Cut the iPad’s fucking price.
Show some leadership.

Nook Glowlight Plus Has The Browser Trick!

Nook Glowlight Plus Has The Browser Trick!

Via Mobileread forum from dnastase:
Based on a similar trick for the NG [Nook Glowlight] found how to access the builtin browser (I was wrong, there is one). It’s not practical, but in case one needs it, it may be worth it:
– go in a book
– try to share on Facebook
– in the dialog that pops up to login press “Help Center”
– a browser will pop up
That does me no good. The Nook demo models at Barnes & Noble aren’t linked to any Facebook account, so the Share icon is grayed-out as unavailable.
And I don’t think I want to try to set up a phony account.

Nook Glowlight Plus: Skipping Registration Needed

Nook Glowlight Plus: Skipping Registration Needed

I finally found my reference to skipping what’s called the OOBE — Out Of Box Experience — of having to register the older Nook Simple Touch. It was at XDA Developers: [Q] Skip the initial setup.
But that method seems to have been deprecated, according to unclelobsterman at the Mobileread forum:
Just received mine yesterday. Handsome unit. Has anyone figured out how to skip the registration / OOBE (out of box experience)? I (foolishly) called Nook support. They hung up on me when I asked…twice. It’s really easy on previous editions but this is entirely new hardware. The Nook button plus the top swipe doesn’t do anything.
Boldfaced emphasis added by me.
WTF, Nook Support! Hanging up on a customer?
So, we have to wait for that now too.
Hey, is there anyone at Barnes & Noble or Nook, Inc. reading this? Throw us a damn bone! Or do you want this device to wind up at a job lot store for US$20 in three months — just like the Simple Touch model did at Radio Shack!

Motorola solves smartphones’ crack problem with Moto ShatterShield display

The new Motorola Droid Turbo 2 phone features Moto ShatterShield display technology – which they claim makes it the first phone with a shatterproof display.

The 5.4-inch ShatterShield display comprises five layers of impact-absorbent material, selected for its unbreakable properties.

Currently the phone is available only through the US carrier Verizon, so for the break-free experience there are a few limiting options.

The phone comes with a four year warrant on the display and the camera lens, which is good to see as they’re putting their money where their mouth is.

While ShatterShield should eventually roll out to more Motorola devices (and maybe beyond), it’s just a select group of customers who can enjoy it at the moment.

Programmed with Arduino, the Tetris MicroCard has an OLED display, six control buttons and a speaker.

It charges via micro USB for six hours’ play time and is available to pre-order now for $49.

JVC go wireless with lightweight Bluetooth headphones

When it comes to headphones, JVC have been pretty quiet this year, which they kicked off with the chunky, bulky statement headphones the JVC Xtreme Xplosives.

They’re tailing off the year with a new set and a step into the essential Bluetooth arena, with their new lightweight Bluetooth headphones, the JVC HA-SBT5.

The headphones weigh 5.5oz, so are built for comfort, and fold down for portability.

There’s a bass boost button for bringing the boom and the rechargeable battery gives 10 hours playback on a 2.5 hour charge.

They’ll have dedicated models for both Android and iOS devices, complete with in-line remotes and mics, and they’ll launch in three colour options: black and red, black and blue or plain white, costing US$59.95 each.

Updatex1: Apple has released first beta of iOS 9.2 for developers and Public Beta Program coming soon. Download iOS 9.2 Beta 1 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch.

Download iOS 9.2 Beta 1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Apple has made first beta of iOS 9.2 to developers only after it released final iOS 9.1 to public, which brought new emoji and several under-the-hood fixes for issues that have plagued users since the launch of iOS 9.
iOS-9.2-beta-1-main
Now that the iOS 9.2 beta 1 download is available to registered members of Apple Developer Program, and it’s likely a public beta will be available in the near future.
Just a few days back when Apple rolled out the final version of iOS 9.1, marking the end of those rather frequent beta releases. With the consumer release of Apple’s iOS 9.1 version out, there was bound to be something cooking in the labs at Cupertino. Unsurprisingly, iOS 9.2’s first beta has made an appearance, which means those already enrolled with an active membership of the Apple Developer Program can download the IPSW file directly from the Developer Center and install it on an iOS device through the usual process.
Apple’s iOS 9.1 brought with it in 150+ new emojis, support for Apple TV and iPad Pro, iOS 9.2 on the other hand is more of a general bug fix and performance improvement release, with a major change being Safari View Controller (SFSafariViewController) in apps now supporting third-party Action Extensions.
It is not yet known what changes iOS 9.2 will bring to Apple’s newest operating system, but as a major .1 update, iOS 9.2 is likely to introduce new features.  There’s also an Xcode 7.2 beta available.
What’s new in iOS 9.2
According to the release notes the Safari view window that pops up in some apps will now support third-party Action Extensions, that works in Safari will also work in SFSafariViewController, allowing it to behave more like the traditional Safari app.
Apple has confirmed this in accompanying release notes for iOS 9.2:
SFSafariViewController now supports 3rd party Action Extensions. Any Action Extension that works in Safari will also work in SFSafariViewController.
Long tapping the Reload button in Safari View Controller now gives options to Reload Without Content Blockers and Request Desktop Site, like in Safari.
iOS 9.2 Beta 1 resolves an issue where WebApps saved to the home screen would not respect the apple-mobile-web-app-status-bar-style meta tag.
There’s no word yet on when Apple plans to release the final version of iOS 9.2 to public. Though Apple may seed iOS 9.2 beta 1 to those iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users who are enrolled in the Public Beta Program soon.
