Apple TV patent for streaming to iOS
You are not reading that wrong. Apple really just patented new technology for reverse AirPlay. This means Apple is planning to offer streaming from Apple TV to iOS. This would also allow for mirroring the Apple TV interface into your smartphones and tablets.
This comes soon after an Apple TV redesign, in which an improved interface shows a much friendlier view for smaller screens. Expect the feature to come at some point in the future.
Opinion: Why the heck would I want to stream from my Apple TV to my iOS? Not only is it better to watch a larger screen, but all the apps and streaming services I could use on Apple TV are already on iOS. In fact, iOS has a better variety! In the patent filing, Apple does explain one good example of how this feature could be helpful. Imagine a group of friends watching a show on Apple TV, then one (or more) have to step out for a bit and don’t want to miss anything (or force others to pause).
