Walmart is certainly the largest online shopping collection of electronics, home furnishings, video games, baby gear and more, has today introduced an all-new app for iOS and Android, paricularly targeting the Apple’s mobile payment system, Apple Pay. Walmart Pay is what the online portal has introduced on its Walmart app. The new Apple Pay rival will roll out in select Walmart stores in the U.S. this month, followed by a nationwide launch within the first half of 2016.
The Walmart Pay is the stores own mobile payments service built into its iOS app and Android apps. How does it works in action? Wlamart Pay’s QR code-based checkout process will involve opening the Walmart app, selecting Walmart Pay, activating the camera, scanning the code displayed at the register and waiting for the cashier to finish bagging your items. Later an electronic receipt will automatically be sent to the Walmart app.
One can admit that this new payments solution won’t work on other store rather than Walmart and will only support major credit/debit cards, pre-paid or Wlamart gift card. With already having 22 million customers actively using its Walmart app each month, placing it among the top three retail apps inthe App Store and Google Play is one the best solution.
Notably, Walmart is one amongst the handful or retailer that have refused to support Apple Pay since its U.S. launch in October 2014. The retailer is however been one over a dozen retailer committed to the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) consurtium and its yet-to-launch rival payments service CurrentC.
Open, Scan, Done – It’s That Easy
Checkout using Walmart Pay happens in three easy steps:
- Open: Visit any register, open the Walmart app and choose Walmart Pay. Activate the camera.
- Scan: At any time during checkout, simply scan the code displayed at the register. Walmart Pay is now connected.
- Done: Associate scans and bags the items… and it’s done. An eReceipt will be sent to the app and can be viewed at any time.
Future plans of Walmart to support Apple Pay or CurrentC remain undisclosed, but the company’s senior Vice President of Services Daniel Eckert said Walmart pay allows “for integration of other mobile wallets in the future.”
