Google interested in buying Softcard?

When Softcard launched, we all thought it would blow Google Wallet and other competitors right out of the water. This service was backed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile – and we all know how powerful carriers are in the USA. It seems mobile payments just haven’t taken off for them, though.
With reports of the company’s morale being pretty low, we are now hearing Google is interested in acquiring the company for $100 million. This is quite a deal after taking into account carriers invested hundreds of million in Softcard, previously known as Isis.
Opinion: We will have to wait ad see if these rumors are true, but for now I can tell you that it would be interesting to see what Google could do with this. But it’s not even about that. It’s said what Google really wants is the patent portfolio.
