Here’s a new way to buy from Steam sales – just use your phone bill

Steam’s holiday sales have begun in earnest, but don’t you fret about not being able to partake of them because you don’t have a credit card. Carrier billing service Coda Payments – Codapay – has announced the Codashop for Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore, with an initial focus on Steam Wallet codes. Just in time for the Thanksgiving sales!

Right now, a credit card or Paypal account is needed to buy Steam Wallet credits. However, Codashop aims to do away with the need to repeatedly input passwords or credit card details. Customers will supposedly be able to purchase Steam Wallet codes in less than a minute.

Codashop transactions will leverage on Codapay’s existing partnerships with telcos like Indosat and Esia in Indonesia, Philippines’ Globe Telecoms, and Singtel and M1 in Singapore. Singapore startup Coda Payments already allows customers to make online payments via their mobile phones, without the need for a credit card, and purchases made through Codashop will do the same. Costs will be charged to customers’ post-paid bills or deducted from pre-paid mobile credit.

Coda Payments got a US$2.3 million series A funding round last year from GMO Global Payment Fund, Rakuten Ventures, CyberAgent Ventures, Golden Gate Ventures, and Skype co-founder Toivo Annus.

Take note though – Steam sales are the devil in disguise, and with such convenient payment methods, you’d best make sure you don’t burn a hole in your pocket!
