New Asus iPad Mini Clone Coming

New Asus iPad Mini Clone Coming

by mikecane

I still can’t figure out how Asus massively screwed up their tablet sales in the U.S..

Could it be Best Buy sales were so poor for the otherwise very good US$199 Asus ZenPad S 8.0 due to its Intel CPU? Could word have spread to avoid it from people who had experience with previous Dell tablets with Intel Inside?

I don’t know.

But I do know that Asus wasted a spectacular marketing opportunity with the Asus ZenPad S 8.0 “Pro/Plus Edition.” It had an optional stylus. When the iPad Pro was introduced with an optional stylus too, a savvy Asus marketing department should have been all over that, braying about Asus having a tablet with a stylus too.

But no.

So I figured these tablets were one-offs by Asus and they planned to abandon them quickly and exit that part of the tablet market.

But no.

A new iPad Mini clone is coming!

Asus Might Launch a 7.9-inch Marshmallow Tablet During MWC 2016; Specs Revealed by GeekBench

Tablet News says this will have a Snapdragon 650 CPU. The 650 was previously known as the 618.

The new Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 phone has a Snapdragon 650 CPU inside. If its AnTuTu 6.x score is anything to go by, this new Asus tablet will be significantly more powerful than the prior-gen Intel Inside ones, with a score in the 77,000-range.

But what I don’t understand is the listing of “9GB” of internal storage. That’s probably 16GBs in full, but still. Why so low?

With this tablet, I’d like to see Asus do three things:

1) Make screen sharpening optional, with the default being OFF.

2) Support for their optional stylus.

3) Better back, getting rid of that screwy landscape-oriented and two-part design.

Anyone out there who has been considering one of the Asus ZenPad S 8.0 tablets should now wait.

Thunderbirds Are Go: Touch And Go

Thunderbirds Are Go: Touch And Go

by mikecane

I’ve described this as an aggressively-stupid series that is absolute shit.

So what a surprise this episode was!

It started out aggressively stupid, though, with Scott berating Kayo for “engaging” with someone who stole a computer element.

Absolutely ridiculous as anyone who knows the original series would recognize.

Setting that silliness aside, we get an excellent rescue …

… that corrects the physical insanity of the Trapped in the Sky remake …

… has some very interesting direction …

… and absolutely superb physics at the end of it:

Of course, underneath it all is The Hood:

Who does his best to woo Kayo to his side with some intriguing moral ambiguity never present in the original series and that even kids today might find confusing (or simply ignore because it flies over their heads).

To top it all off, two cherries!

A genuinely-surprising rescue of Kayo herself …

… and a final line used so many times in so many other things but that can still come off as funny in the right context:

Very bad structure, but this is clearly the third best episode of this series. Too bad everything else hasn’t been on the level of this and Extraction and Skyhook. Such a lost opportunity for such a vast investment.

Elephone Going Pro with Elephone Explorer Pro

We don’t have any sales figures but we guess the Explorer sold well as a 2nd generation model is coming soon. The new camera has an all new design (slightly more original looking than the first model) and will use a NTK96660 chip and Sony IMX117 12 mega-pixel camera.

The OS all be multi-ligule and will support a ‘multicast motion’ feature, whatever that might be.

Are you an action camera user? Which brand are you using? Which are you planning to buy?

LeTV Le Max Pro: A Beast

LeTV Le Max Pro: A Beast

by mikecane

Launched: Letv’s Le Max Pro becomes the world’s first Snapdragon 820 phone

Letv Le Max Pro: Pictures and Specifications

Le Max Pro will be the first phone with Snapdragon 820, ultrasonic sensor, and WiFi 802.11ad

Hands-on with the first Snapdragon 820 phone: The LeTV Le Max Pro

A 6.33-inch screen at 2560 x 1440 pixels with an AnTuTu score in the 130,000-range (probably more like 80,000 under AnTuTu 5.x). The battery is worrisome at just 3,300mAh, however, but with Quick Charge 3.0 that might not matter much. There might not be a microSD card slot, though. But we’ll see what the reviews say later on!

Letv Le Max: Specifications

Model	Letv Le Max
SIM Card	TBA
Color	Gold
Capacity	RAM: 4GB ROM: 32/64/128GB
Language	Multi Language
Chipset	CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
System	Android 6.0 based EUI
Screen	Display size: 6.33-inches Resolution: 2560 x 1440 pixels
Cameras	Rear: 21 mega-pixel with OIS Front: TBA
Network and Wireless Connectivity	TBA
Battery capacity	Non-removable 3300mAh

Availability and, most importantly, price are yet to be announced. But it will likely appear for sale for American customers at the official LeMall — saving us from the problems associated with sketchy middlemen sellers who jack up the price and create return problems.

LeTV came out of nowhere with its phones last year and managed to sell four million of them. That’s really one hell of a feat in a country where premium-price buyers tend to eschew domestic Chinese brands and head straight for the iPhone (and it’s usually the iPhone, not a Samsung). I’ve yet to read of anyone being completely disappointed with one of these phones. Buyer’s regret seems to be low.

This is a phone I’ve been waiting for. I’m very keen to see reviews, videos, and owner comments.

And yes, I know Huawei announced the lustastic Mate 8 — but without any plan to release it in the U.S.. By the time it arrives in America, will anyone still care? Well, I would — if first fobbing it off elsewhere kicks in economies of scale that drive the price surprisingly lower than it currently is (near US$600!).
