Kuo: Apple’s AR Glasses Could Enter Mass Production Later This Year 2019
In his latest investor note, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple’s AR glasses will go into mass production as soon as Q4 of 2019. However, later on in the note, the analyst proceeds to claim that it will be mass produced by Q2 2020.
Apple has been rumored to be working on AR/VR headset running its own ‘rOS’ and a custom processor. Kuo claims that the AR glasses from Apple will only act as a display, with the iPhone doing the heavy lifting of processing all the data, providing location services, and more. Like the Apple Watch, the AR glasses will connect to the iPhone wirelessly.
Given the constraints of packing everything inside AR glasses, it does make sense that Apple lets the iPhone do all the heavy lifting. Right now, the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi offer AR/VR headset which uses their own smartphones as a display. Apple’s implementation is slightly different as the AR glasses will come with their own display. Think of it like Google Glasses minus all the hardware and one which will talk wirelessly to your iPhone. The AR glasses will likely come with some set of sensors though, to deliver an optimum experience.
The report is light on additional details about the AR glasses, on how it will work, the feature it will offer, and more. Apple has been aggressively working on ARKit, its AR platform after first debuting it with iOS 11. While ARKit-powered apps have not really taken off on iPhones and iPads, they are bound to help when Apple gets around to releasing its AR glasses in 2020.
